Lightyear, a 2022 American computer animated science-fiction action-adventure movie produced by Walt Disney Pictures Motion Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. This film is a spinoff of the Toy Story film franchise and the fifth overall installment. The film centers on Buzz Lightyear and the film’s presentation as part of the Toy Story franchise in which Lightyear is a main character.

It was written and directed jointly by Angus MacLane and produced by Galyn Sman. Chris Evans voices the title character. Keke Palmer, Peter Sohn and Dale Soules also play supporting roles. Lightyear is a space-ranger who after being abandoned on hostile planets with his crew and commander, attempts to return home but faces a threat to the safety of the universe.
The idea of Buzz Lightyear as a human, who lives in a fictional universe within another universe, was introduced in 2000’s direct-to-video movie Buzz Lightyear: The Adventure Begins. This film was used as the pilot for the television series Buzz Lightyear Of Star Command (2000-2001). MacLane was an avid science-fiction lover and pitched the idea to make a movie about Buzz Lightyear at Pixar. The film would be inspired by the science-fiction films that he grew-up watching. The animators gave the film a “cinematic”, “chunky” look. The film’s music was composed by Michael Giacchino.
Lightyear premiered in Los Angeles at the El Capitan Theatre on June 8th. It was theatrically released in America on June 17th, 2022 in RealD 3D and 4DX, Dolby Cinema and IMAX formats. It was the first Pixar movie to be released worldwide in theaters since Onward, which was released in March 2020. Additionally, it featured scenes that were specifically designed for IMAX theaters. It was a huge box office success, earning $226 million worldwide and a budget of $200 million. The film received mostly positive reviews from critics. They praised its animation, voice acting and visual effects, as well as its score. However, they were critical of its screenplay.
